2024 Artist Statement

My practice merges clay and cloth to explore themes of community and identity, blending traditional pottery and quilt-making techniques with innovative use of mixed materials. This approach achieves a harmony between craftsmanship and creative freedom.

In my creative work, I focus on the formation of memories and how we use images and icons to solidify our understanding of a constantly evolving reality. By layering information and labor, I infuse each piece with personal meaning and identity, enhancing their significance. This exploration of our personal experiences aims to foster deep connections and shared understanding within the community.

The genesis of my work lies in extracting resonant images from my personal memories and dissecting their significance. As a child, I found solace in fantasy narratives where good consistently triumphed over evilโ€”stories that made sense of the world. These tales intermingle with real-life experiences, which unlike my childhood stories, unfold in messier narratives. Whether it's to share a laugh, a vulnerable moment, or to simply connect, transforming our experiences into stories allows us to reach out and touch the lives of others.
