2024 Artist Statement
My practice focuses on the use of clay and cloth to investigate themes of community and identity. My process combines techniques from the traditional pottery and quilt-making worlds with innovative mixed material use, creating a balance of craftsmanship with creative freedom.
Through my creative work, I delve into the formation of memories. I investigate how we use images and icons to form our memories of an ever-moving reality. Through careful layering of information and labor, I imbue each piece with my own identity, infusing it with a sense of personal meaning and significance. I believe that by exploring the rich tapestry of our personal experiences, we can connect with others on a deep and meaningful level, fostering a sense of community and shared understanding.
The starting point for my practice is finding resonant images from my own memory and pull apart their significance. As a child, I would escape into the world of the fantasy narratives I loved, where everything was understandable and evil always lost. These chronicles and the lessons learned from them bounce around my head alongside the memories of my real-life adventures, the narratives of which are never as neat. Our lives, or moments in them, can always be turned into a tale that can be told to others. Sometimes itโs to get a laugh, sometimes itโs to share a vulnerable moment, but it is always to gain a connection with another human being.
